Albert started out as a, thrice weekly, single panel cartoon at althought.com (sadly now defunct) and was developed upon between 2003 and 2007 whereby certain characterisations were laid down and slightly surreal situations commented upon not only in the cartoon but also within the blog - written by Albert and Slim.
What is Albert? He is an anthropomorph, that is he is a creature with human characteristics; what he is not is a snail and he gets slightly annoyed at being called one. He could be described as a cross between a featherless, flightless bird (body), a snake (tail - which Albert calls his coil) and a gastropod (movement).
Living in a small village in Northumberland, in the north of Great Britain, he has numerous adventures with his various friends amongst whom are Granny Poad, a lady of advanced years - but with a taste for large handbags, skateboards, motorbikes, blues music and Real Ale - Mister Bufoe, Granny’s Dwarven gardener and sometime toad, together with Vincent, a computer geek.
Witches, Gargoyles, Ghosts, Fairies, Dragons, giant Spiders, Wizards and the occasional Haggis, amongst others, are to be found in the adventures within the cartoons and the Albert books were all inspired by the cartoon panels.
A selection of the cartoons appear below for your delectation:
